A Royal Rendezvous

Posted by Marilyn on February 14, 2006

When one generation passes the torch to another it’s a touching and profound moment. On February 23rd a reunion of sorts will occur when the oceanliners Queen Mary and Queen Mary 2 meet for the first time.

Named after the consort of King George V, and launched by Her Majesty Queen Mary, the oceanliner began her maiden voyage on May 27, 1936. During the outbreak of the Second World War it was commissioned to transport military troops. Painted grey it became known as “The Grey Ghost” and it was regarded as the largest and fastest troopship. After the war ended, the Queen Mary resumed passenger duty on July 31, 1947. It was retired from maritime service 40 years ago and it is now one of the most well known attractions in Long Beach, California.

The Queen Mary 2 was launched in December 2003 and had its maiden voyage on January 12, 2004. It is longer, taller, and nearly twice as large, it can carry 600 more passengers than its namesake.

The historic meeting of the two Queen Mary’s takes place during Queen Mary 2’s first-ever voyage from Los Angeles.
